I really like that last line. A very good summary of one interpretation of Eva's over-arching message.

It's great. I think you can find other meanings to it but it was well presented. Never thought Shinji strangling Asuka could be him trying to verify if he's in the real world or not (that's what the image says, doesn't it?).

Thats part of the interpretation this image gives.

I'm not entirely convinced, that scene is so ridiculously open ended. But in the same way theres nothing to indicate this image is wrong.

It was stated by Shinji's seiyu, so Word of Dante.

[–]Rein3   27 points28 points  (1 child)

I don't like people calling Shinji a wuss, it's... come one, the kid had a horrible life... I feel bad for him!

Reminds me of this

...

"Short but pointless".

I mean, in /r/Evangelion, are you really going to find people who didn't appreciate the Anime?!

But it's great for sharing.

But it's great for sharing.

Exactly, I've already sent it on to two people who didn't entirely get it.

I think it's more for people who have only just seen it for the first time and are confused. Like the links in the side bar that help people out just coming off the show.

I've seen this show, true end, and the re-builds probably half-a dozen times each and I didn't understand that Shinji gave humanity the choice of living their lives the way they wanted until I read your summation! Thinking about it that's so fucking sad. Everyone around you is constantly telling you to grow up and get over it and just pilot the damn robot; but when all is said and done nobody really wants to suffer so in the end he's all but alone proving that he was/is stronger than almost everyone.

[–]IncendiaryLemon88   [S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my summation, I only found the image, I didn't make it, however I'm glad it helped!

Everyone loves the tang.

"Shinji decides that anyone who wants to live in a perfect world can, and anyone that wants to accept the harshness of human interaction can come back."

Can somebody clear up for me when this is specified? I thought Shinji just rejected Instrumentality, but shit got fucked up in the process (something akin to the fallout from Rebuild's near-third impact). Though this would make sense given that I never considered why Asuka was still alive for some reason. I thought she just helped Shinji towards making the decision he made.

[–]dalith911 12 points13 points  (1 child)

IIRC Yui says the whole "anyone can come back" near the end of the Instrumentality sequence.

I was once told that in last scene, you could see the humans going out of the tang sea. But I watched it again, and I can't confirm that's true. Maybe that was a lie?

[–]Rein3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more complicated than "I want to be normal". They also need a strong sense of self, and individuality, or something like that.

[–]aswilliams92 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Ooooooooh...I get it, but there were many other ways to teach that lesson that would have been less soul-crushingly depressing.

[–]Attiias[🍰] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that's why we love evangelion.

[–]Loganowitz 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Does the tang let everyone live their own lives happily in a bubble or break down all personal barriers so that everyone completely understands each other, thus negating the hurt because everyone understands each other because they are the same entity?

[–]Loganowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that said, Shingi chooses individuality despite the hurt because it is the better of the two options.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, even if this is simplified, it helped me think through the final bit with Asuka at the end of EoE. Shinji's tying to determine if its real or not makes sense to me.

[–]chrbir1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tangy

[–]sebbodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was AWESOME to read. Seriously.

[–]Wikwak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omedetou.

[–]DrCakey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you put it that way, it makes you wonder what everybody was ever confused about.

[–]cowboycoder_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I just marathoned the whole series and movie in a couple days and was so lost with that ending.

[–]clooneytoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"who didnt fully understand EoE" you dick, so everybody

[–]Gladstone98 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

EoE had a plot?? This is news to me.
